What's that you say!?!
Here is a story to keep you busy for five minutes...
The other day I was kickin back at east when a patron returned a book (thats not the good part, keep reading). As he placed the book on the desk he gave me one of those nods with the eye expression warning me that he had something to say. I quietly took the book as he told me that he had gotten the cover wet and wanted to know if there would be a fine.
After further examination I did indeed see a splatter on the book that streaked across the cover in a diaganol fashion. I then rubbed my fingers on it to see if it was still wet and asked if he had just dropped some water on it. Now here is where it gets interesting...
With one of those "I did it, but wont admitt it" looks he said, "it was something watery." Well I was a little concerned...I had just rubbed my fingers on it. So I decided to get it out of him. I could see he was somewhat embarassed and so I sarcastically began listing things it could be, coffee, beer, the blood from a roommate that got on the book as he beat them with it...you know the usual stuff. I even mentioned that our only concern was that if it causes disease we would need to know about it. At that point he got concerned and a little red. Finally after telling him about three book mutilation cases (only one of which were real) to tell him about all of the sick stuff that could be on it he told be he sneezed on it.
Now, it would have to be one really big, sick, wet one to do what it did to the book so I still have my doubts because he was lookin pretty healthy to me at the time. But who am I to say.

If They Only Had a Brain
They should give out an IQ test for people that want to check out Inter-library loan books. That way we could weed out those people who don't remember the warning to pass the book around when you leave/enter the library. Also, we could test for those people who are unable to see the color red and can't read the "Please Return Books Directly Back to ILL" written at the bottom of every Interlibrary-Loan sticker.
I swear, the ILL-Idiots and the Jamba-Jerks have to be cousins or something. Inbreeders.

Latest on the DVR's
I found out after a lot of time and energy being invested into learning about the DVR's that the program that we use really sucks!
After even more time and energy from several people on the crew (who I thank) being invested, we found out that putting security on the cameras to prevent Special Collections from watching WAS NOT WORTH IT!!!!
Everything will therefore be returned to normal!

Dealing with it... then forgetting it and going to Burger Nite
We can deal with change and policy well enough, I think. Dealing with the West Desk is what proves increasingly difficult these days. The WD has never been that heavenly Swiss chocolate with the hot babe on it, but at least in the beginning the posts smacked more of agreeable semi-sweet morsels than blocks of the bitter baking stuff. Absorb the analogy while I finish this Grandma's Cookie. Ah. Now, who's coming to Burger Nite next week with 707, 721, and me? Details forthcoming, fetchers.

More Change! Does it ever end?
Sorry, but I have more to tell you that you MUST BE AWARE OF!!!
The list or who is approved for the temporary access cards is updated as of this week. That means that if they are not on the list...THEY DON'T GET A CARD!!! In order for them to get a card it must be checked out by someone on the list, and we must have that persons signture.
MORE: There are two new cards. One says Conservation on it...that means it is for others in conservation but never to be given out to student employees...if they left their cards at home they are SOL. Again, only those on the list can check it out. This card is currently located behind card #6 in the plastic holder. There is another card labeled Staff. This will never be given out unless approved and handed out by Jeff or myself. This card requires the correct approval from "those in the know" so to speak, and Jeff and I know which clearances can be given to whom. If we can not be found you can talk to 702 and he's smart enough to decide what to do...you are not! (HA! hate me now?)
Finally the changes to the cameras are taking more time than I thought so I'll get back to you as to when that will be done.
Thsi onse far u 738!

Change is always happening...DEAL WITH IT!
For those of you who don't know Special Collections now has access to the DVR's. Some of you are thinking that they always did...well you are wrong. When we were still looking at the cameras through little TV monitors and using VHS recording devices they did have access. Russ informes me that since the DVR's were put in place they have not been able to use them. Now full access has been given them.
Do to their new access to these cameras I would like to announce this change. By the end of next week all of the cameras will be given a security level. This will keep Special Collections eyes on only their cameras, but it will require us to do something extra.
Any time we will want to look at the cameras we will have to log in under one of our four user names. However this may cause some problems and will need to be worked out. Since this method of security has never been utilized here, there may be some bugs and unforeseen problems in doing this.
I can already think of a few that I have not yet figured out how to fix or get around. I will keep you updated upon any changes but it will not get much more complicated than already explained. If it begins to get too difficult we will probobly just go back to the way things are and excuse this breach in security.
I hope you read this even though it is long and from me.
